Hernando County Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Should I Ever Poison a Rodent?

When you are plagued with a rodent problem, what is the best method for eliminating them? Many times poison is the first thing we think of. But is that the best method? Very rarely and only by professionals.

How It Will Affect You
There are at least a couple of ways that using poison to kill rodents will affect you. When the rodents are inside your house and you set out poison for them, you run the risk of small children getting into the poison. If the mouse or rat eats the poison, they are very likely to die somewhere in the house, possibly inside a wall in your house. If a mouse or rat dies inside a wall, there is virtually no way to remove the dead critter unless you tear open the wall. When the rodent dies, the body will begin to stink. It will stink for about three or four days until it decomposes enough to quit smelling. There is nothing you can do about it, but live with the odor. It smells kind of like natural gas, so you may think you have a gas leak somewhere.

How It Will Affect Your Pets and/or Livestock
If you set out poison for rodents, you run the risk of your pets getting into the poison. You really don’t want to poison a family pet. Also, if you live in the country where you can have other animals like cows, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, or turkeys, they may get into the poison, too. If the rodent(s) does manage to get the poison and then dies out in the open, your cat or dog might eat the poisoned mouse or rat, which will make them sick, too. Even worse, your neighbor’s pet might be the one to get sick and die, and then you’ll have problems with them, too.

How It Will Affect Other Wildlife
When you successfully poison the rodents in your yard or on your property, scavenger birds or animals may eat the dead critters and in turn, they will get sick or die. Or other creatures that you didn’t intend to harm may get into the poison. If it happens to be a protected species, you could find yourself in hot water.

It’s best just to utilize another method for ridding yourself of unwanted rodent pests. If you need help, call your local game department or a pest control professional to come out and help you.
